THIBODAUX - Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Molly Meresereau stopped twelve shots on goal and kept the Colonels in the game. However, it wasn't enough to stop Houston Baptist (4-6-1) as the Huskies shut out the Nicholls State University women's soccer team (4-7-0) in the finale of the Colonels' non-conference slate.
The Huskies came out firing as Houston Baptist fired 13 shots. Fortunately, Mersereau weathered the Husky attack, recording nine saves on ten shots on goal.
However, Houston Baptist finally struck in the 37th minute as Cindy Hedden collected a cross from Gabby Trujillo, working her way through traffic and finding the net to put the Colonels down 1-0 late in the first.
The Colonels tried to mount an offensive charge of their own, but the HBU defense forced kept Nicholls off-balance as the Colonels generated just five shots in the first half.
HBU maintained control in the second as a 70th minute strike from Mychael Morris in the box put the Colonels down 2-0 and a goal off a free kick by Isla Cameron just outside the 18 made it 3-0 six minutes later.
"The main thing we have to learn from this is that when things aren't going our way, the only way to change it is to keep working," head coach Dylan Harrison said.
The Colonels will now prepare for their 2009 Southland Conference opener with a trip to Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday. The contest ends a stretch of three games in six days and four games in ten days for Nicholls.
Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex in Hammond.
