2009 Southland Conference Women's Volleyball Tournament Bracket
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - After claiming a five-set thriller on Friday night to clinch a tournament spot, the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team (12-18, 6-10 Southland Conference) looked to improve their seeding and gained momentum against the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (22-12, 11-5 Southland). However, it would be the homestanding Ladyjacks who would claim a 3-0 win on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Colonels' loss, coupled with Texas-San Antonio's 3-0 win over Texas-Arlington, placed Nicholls seventh overall in their second consecutive trip to the Southland Conference Tournament.
Nicholls was led by freshman outside hitter Jennifer Brandt, who totaled seven kills on 22 attempts while recording just two attack errors.
However, Stephen F. Austin dominated the match, claiming the straight set win by scores of 25-12, 25-16, and 25-15 and outhitting the Colonels .402 to .125.
The Colonels, who qualified for the postseason tournament last season, made the postseason field in consecutive seasons for the first time in school history.
When Nicholls returns to action, they will square off against No. 2 seed Sam Houston State. The Colonels will try to rebound from a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Bearkats back on Oct. 16.
First serve between the Colonels and Bearkats is set for 4 p.m. on Friday at UTSA's Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas.
