THIBODAUX, La. -
Nicholls women's basketball took its first lead of the game - 51-50 - on a junior Ricshanda Bickham free throw with less than two minutes in the contest, but could not contain Southern as the Lady Jaguars went on to win 56-51 on Thursday night in Stopher Gym.
"I have to give it to the team, they stuck in there," said Head Coach DoBee Plaisance. "We had a shot late to defeat a really good team, but I think we ran out of gas late. It still was a great effort."
The Colonels trailed by as many as 11 points - 46-35 - midway through the second quarter, and went on a 16-4 run to take the lead on Bickham's free throw. However from that moment on, Nicholls (2-8) could not score a bucket as Southern (6-2) went on to close the game on a 6-0 tear.
Nicholls frequented the free throw line, making 26-of-36 free throws as Bickham led all Colonel scorers with 15 points. Also crossing into double figures for Nicholls were sophomore Jasmine Hoskins with 13 and junior Jamia Akins with 10. Establishing a new career-high in rebounds was junior Cassie Hearon with 12.
Southern had two players cross into double figures with bench players Tenesha Brown and Jamie Floyd doing the honor with 12 and 11, respectively. Floyd added 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Nicholls will take to the road to play Louisiana-Monroe on Monday December 28. Tip-off for that contest is set for 6:30 p.m.
