THIBODAUX, La. -
Nicholls women's basketball team tried their best to overcome their first half woes, battling back in the second half against South Alabama, however their run was not enough as the squad fell 63-50 in Stopher Gym on Saturday afternoon.
In the loss, the Colonels (1-5) were playing the Lady Jaguars (3-4) without leading scorer junior guard Ricshanda Bickham, who sat out due to illness. Bickham is averaging 18.2 points per game this season through five contests.
"I think that the first half we were adjusting to not having Ricshanda out there running the point," said Head Coach DoBee Plaisance. "Once we settled down and got in a rhythm in the second half, things started to click. However we didn't take care of the ball to the best of out ability."
Nicholls had 26 turnovers in the game, but only committed 11 in the second half on their way to matching South Alabama with 34 second period points. South Alabama held a 29-16 advantage at the midway point.
In the second half, South Alabama built a 22-point lead - 54-33 - with 7:09 left, but from that moment on, Nicholls went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to get within striking distance.
However, South Alabama out-scored Nicholls 6-to-4 over the final four minutes to edge out the win.
The Colonels were led by true freshman Alisha Allen in the loss with a game-best 16 points, coupled with eight rebounds. Allen was the only Colonel to cross the decade mark.
The Lady Jaguars had three players in double figures with Christian Shelter leading the way with 12.
In the loss, Nicholls did out-rebound South Alabama 45-to-35, and was better from three-point range, shooting 37.5 percent (6-of-16) for the game.
The Colonels will host the Centenary Ladies on Wednesday in Stopher Gym. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
