MOBILE, Ala. -
Junior Lacey Gros pitched a complete game shut out and notched 10 strikeouts in Nicholls 6-0 victory over South Alabama on Wednesday evening.
Gros only gave up six hits and three walks in improving to 2-1 on the season. Also standing out at the plate was senior Kodi Butler and true freshman Megan Gaspard as each notched two hits, a RBI and a run. In fact, the No.1 thru No.4 batters in the Colonel lineup combined for a 6-of-15 showing at the plate with five RBI and two runs.
The Colonels (4-2) and the Jaguars (1-4) were knotted in a scoreless affair until the top of the fifth when Nicholls put five runs on the scoreboard. The inning started with a walk by junior Karla Troxler, and then senior Haley Burkett got a bunt single to put two on with no outs.
Sophomore Tori Lay attempted to sacrifice bunt Troxler and Burkett over, but instead reached on an error to load the bases. The Colonels then got two runs on back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore Whitney Roan and Gaspard to give the Colonels the 2-0 lead.
Butler walked to bring in a run, and after a fly out junior Lyndsay Mesh, senior Danielle Clayton hit a two-RBI double to centerfield to give the Colonels the 5-0 advantage.
Nicholls picked up one more in the top of the seventh via a Mesh RBI single that plated Butler to round out Nicholls scoring.
The Colonels will resume action this weekend in the 23rd Annual Louisiana Classic hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette. Nicholls first opponent in the tournament is Providence on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
