LAFAYETTE, La. -
Nicholls nabbed its second win in the 23rd Annual Louisiana Classic, a 4-0 victory over Lipscomb at Rajun Cajun Field on the campus of Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels (6-2) broke the scoreless affair in the bottom of the second when junior Lyndsay Mesh hit a RBI single to left field to score senior Danielle Clayton from second. Clayton doubled to lead off the inning, and the Colonels led 1-0 after two complete.
The rest of the Colonel run support came in the bottom of the third when Nicholls put a three-spot on the scoreboard. The first of the three runs came via a RBI single by senior Kodi Butler that brought home true freshman Megan Gaspard from second to give Nicholls the 2-0 advantage.
Nicholls then went on to load up the bases, and junior Karla Troxler drew a walk to plate junior Audrey Wood. True freshman Kayla Watterson rounded out the scoring for the Colonels in the inning with her sacrifice fly that scored Clayton.
The Lady Bisons (1-1) only had five base runners in the game, and were held in check by Wood who only allowed four hits through seven innings while fanning only one. Wood improved to 3-1 in the circle with the decision.
Leading the Colonels at the plate was Clayton and Butler as each recorded two hits. Butler also added a RBI, while Clayton had two runs to her credit.
Nicholls will close out the tournament tomorrow with a doubleheader. The first against Louisiana-Lafayette will begin at 12:30 p.m., and the second versus Louisiana Tech will start at 3 p.m.
