BATON ROUGE, La. - Nicholls picked up a 7-1 victory over Southern on Tuesday afternoon in Baton Rouge, La.

The Colonels (7-4) broke the scoreless affair in the top of the second with two runs when senior Danielle Clayton stole home for the first of the runs, and then true freshman Kayla Watterson tripled to plate junior Karla Troxler.

Nicholls continued to put runs on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when true freshman Lauren Martinez hit a RBI double to score true freshman Kara Harrington to start off the inning. Watterson scored on a wild pitch, and then Laine Strickland hit a RBI single to right field to score Martinez to round out the inning. After six complete, Nicholls led 5-0.

After the Lady Jaguars (5-6) failed to score in the bottom half of the sixth, the Colonels added two more insurance runs in the via a RBI double by Harrington and a bases loaded walk that brought home sophomore Whitney Roan.

Southern added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but that is as close as they would get in the game.

Leading Nicholls in the circle was junior Audrey Wood as she got the victory. Wood threw all seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, while striking out three. Standing out at the plate was Harrington with two doubles, a RBI and a run scored.

Nicholls will resume action this weekend at the Mizuno Classic hosted by Southern Miss.
