Final Stats

THIBODAUX, La. - In the second day of the Mizuno Classic, the Nicholls softball team picked up an early 2-1 win against South Alabama but dropped the final game 3-0 to Louisiana Tech.

In the first game on Sunday, Nicholls (10-5) defeated South Alabama 2-1 backed by the strong pitching of Lacey Gros. Gros improved to 5-2 on the season while striking out seven batters and giving up only six hits on the 30 batters she faced.

USA took an early 1-0 lead over the Colonels in the bottom of the third inning when Kelsy Donaldson scored off of Carolina Mendoza's single to center field. The lead would be short lived as USA's two errors in the sixth gave Nicholls the final lead in the game.

The Colonels got off to a good start in the top of the sixth as Audrey Wood singled to left field. Lauren Martinez came in to pinch run for Wood. Danielle Clayton reached first on a USA fielding error which sent Martinez to second. Clayton then advanced to second following a wild pitch which sent Martinez to third. Lyndsay Mesh picked up the RBI when she hit a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield and both Martinez and Clayton were able to score the two unearned runs for the final lead.

Megan Gaspard, Audrey Wood, Kodi Butler, and Haley Burkett all finished with one hit while Lyndsay Mesh picked up the lone RBI.

In the second contest, Nicholls fell 3-0 to Louisiana Tech (5-5). The Lady Techsters had seven hits and scored all three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Audrey Wood (4-3) suffered the loss for the Colonels. Wood pitched 4.2 innings giving up seven hits, three runs, and one had strikeout. The Colonels only registered two hits and had one error.

The Colonels will be back in action when they face the Southeastern La. on Tuesday at 5 p.m. It will be the first home and conference game of the season.
