The Colonel baseball team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday night, dropping an 11-4 decision to Alabama at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
Nicholls drops to 3-1 on the season, while the Crimson Tide improve to 2-2.
Senior Jake Parrish (Albuquerque, N.M./Northeast Oklahoma State) took the loss for Nicholls, falling to 0-1 on the season. The right-hander went 4.2 innings, surrendering seven runs on nine hits. For Alabama, Miers Quigley picked up the win, lasting five innings and striking out eight Colonels.
Alabama scored two in the first and four more in the third on a bases-clearing triple by Kent Matthes.
Nicholls got on the board in the fourth when junior Kevin Schlegel (Oklahoma City, Okla./Northeast Texas CC) drove a two-RBI single through the middle, plating juniors Scott Moseley (Enterprise, Miss./Meridian CC) and Eric Douglas (Vicksburg, Miss./Hinds CC) and cutting the Tide lead to 6-2.
In the , the Colonels scored again as junior Chris Murrill (Mobile, Ala./Alabama Southern CC) scored on an RBI single by Adam Miley (Baton Rouge, La./Bossier Parrish CC). In the eighth, Mile led off with a triple to right center and later scored Nicholls' fourth run of the game.
Miley finished 2-for-4 on the night with an RBI and a run scored, while Murrill, who stole two bases, and Moseley each also recorded two hits.
Out of the bullpen, senior Lance Guidroz (Lockport, La./Santa Fe CC) threw 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and fanning one, while sophomore Drew Erwin (Alvin, Texas/Alvin) allowed one run on two hits, pitching the Tide half of the seventh.
Matthes hit for the cycle on the night, adding a homerun in the fifth, a double in the seventh and a single as part of a three-run eighth for the Tide.
