THIBODAUX, La. - Nicholls got another solid effort from junior Lacey Gros in the circle to help lift the Colonels to a 4-1 victory over the Lions on Wednesday evening in the Colonel Softball Complex.

"I was very pleased with the team effort and how our pitching staff held it together in the series," said Head Coach Jenny Parsons.

"Lacey did an outstanding job today, and we had some timely hits to get her the run support she needed to be at ease out there."

Gros finished the game with 12 strikeouts while only giving up one run on five hits to improve to 7-2 on the season. The Schriever, La. native leads the SLC in strikeouts (82), innings pitched (65.2) and opponent average (.176).

The game was knotted at zero until the bottom of the fourth when Nicholls (13-5, 3-0) put four on the scoreboard. The first of the runs came via a RBI single by junior Lyndsey Mesh that scored senior Danielle Clayton from third. Clayton started off the inning with a triple down the left field line.

Nicholls made the score 2-0 when true freshman Kayla Watterson doubled to right center to plate true freshman Kara Harrington from second. Harrington was pinch running for Mesh, who advanced to second due to a junior Karla Troxler walk. The following run came courtesy of a senior Haley Burkett RBI single. Burkett's single scored Troxler to give the Colonels the 3-0 advantage.

The final run of the inning came via a sacrifice fly by sophomore Whitney Roan to left field that plated true freshman Laine Strickland from third to round out the Colonels scoring in the inning.

The Lions (5-5, 0-3) added one in the top of the last when Megan Gomez went yard over the left field fence, but Gros kept her cool, retired the next batter and got the 4-1 victory. Leading Nicholls at the plate were Clayton and Burkett, whom each went 2-for-3.

Nicholls will be back in action on Saturday with doubleheader action against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the Colonel Softball Complex starting at 1 p.m.
