THIBODAUX, La. -
Nicholls picked up two wins against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon at the Colonel Softball Complex to remain undefeated in Southland Conference play, while extending its winning streak to five games.
The Colonels (15-5, 5-0) picked up a 4-0 win in the first game, and a 4-2 victory in the second. In the first game, junior Lacey Gros had a no-hitter going until the sixth before yielding two hits. Gros picked up the shutout victory in the circle, fanning 11 and allowing only three hits to improve to 8-2 on the season.
Nicholls broke the scoreless affair in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk that plated true freshman Kara Harrington to give the Colonels the 1-0 lead. Harrington was pinch running for senior Haley Burkett who walked to lead off the inning.
The Colonels added three more in the bottom of the sixth with the first coming on a two-out bases loaded walk that plated true freshman Tsade Joubert. Joubert was pinch running for junior Lyndsay Mesh, who led off the inning with a walk. The other two runs in the inning came from senior Kodi Butler who hit a two-RBI single up the middle that brought home true freshman Megan Gaspard and junior Karla Troxler.
The Islanders (7-13, 0-5) failed to score in the top of the seventh, and the Colonels picked up the 4-0 victory. Leading Nicholls at the plate was Butler with a 1-for-3 performance that included two RBIs.
In the second game, Nicholls trailed 1-0 entering the fifth inning, however in the fifth, Nicholls put a four-spot on the scoreboard to retake the lead. The first of the runs came on a RBI double by junior Audrey Wood to centerfield to score true freshman Megan Gaspard. True freshman Kayla Watterson followed Wood with a two-RBI single to plate Wood and Butler to give Nicholls the 3-1 advantage.
The final run of the inning came via a throwing error by Islander third baseman Sandy Schumann that allowed Harrington to score. TAMUCC bounced back in the top of the sixth with a score of their own, but could not make up the difference and went on to fall to the Colonels.
Leading the Colonels at the plate in the second game was Wood with a 2-for-3 showing that included a RBI, a run and a triple. True freshman Kayla Watterson also produced, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
