SHREVEPORT, La. -
Nicholls started off the 2009 season on a good note with a 3-1 victory over Bryant University and a 4-3 win over Missouri State on Friday in the Centenary Tournament.
Nicholls (2-0) beat Bryant University after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning via a three run homerun over the left field wall by senior Danielle Clayton. Bryant University did fire back in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun to make the score 3-1, but that was all that junior Lacey Gros would yield in the circle as the Colonels would go on to win.
Gros pitched the complete game, giving up only one run, one hit and one walk while striking out seven.
In the second game against Missouri State, both teams were tied 3-3 heading into the seventh when junior Audrey Wood hit a bomb over the centerfield wall to give the Colonels the 4-3 lead. Wood would pitch the Colonels to victory in the bottom of the seventh, retiring three of the first four batters to ensure the win.
Wood, like Gros, went the distance, allowing five runs, two earned, in the win while striking out seven.
The Colonels will square off with Boston College at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and will follow up with SIU-Edwardsville at 11:30 a.m.
