SHREVEPORT, La. -
Nicholls defeated Centenary 4-2 on Sunday in eight innings to end the Centenary Tournament with a win and improve to 3-2 on the season.
Centenary, who finished its own tournament 4-1, drew first blood in the bottom of the second with two runs via a two RBI double by Caitlin Cavarra. The Ladies continued to load the bases in the bottom of the second, however the Colonels made a pitching swap to junior Audrey Wood. Wood guided Nicholls out of the inning with no more runs, and pitched scoreless relief the rest of the way en route to getting the victory.
Nicholls' offensive fire power showed in the next half inning when Nicholls tied the game at two. The runs came by way of two RBI single by senior Kodi Butler that scored true freshman Lauren Martinez and sophomore Whitney Roan. Martinez was pinch running for true freshman Kayla Watterson who led off the inning with a double. Roan singled in her at bat.
The game remained tied at two apiece until the top of the eighth when senior Haley Burkett knocked in two runs via a single to left field. Scoring on the single were juniors Karla Troxler and Lyndsey Mesh. Centenary did not score in its extra half inning, and Nicholls went on to win.
Leading Nicholls at the plate was Butler with a 2-for-3 showing and two RBIs, while Mesh finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Wood improved to 2-1 on the season in circle, throwing 6.2 innings of scoreless and hitless relief while striking out eight.
The Colonels will remain on the road to play at South Alabama on Wednesday. The lone contest is set for 4 p.m.
