The Colonels (17-9, 7-2 SLC) attempted to capitalize off two Golden Eagle errors in the second inning but fell just short of scoring the equalizing run. Kara Harrington started off the inning by reaching first on a USM fielding error. Following an error on a pickoff attempt, Harrington reached second. Logan Johnson then singled up the middle and Harrington attempted to score but was called out at home. Tory Lay popped out and Whitney Roan struck out looking which ended the chance of a comeback for the Colonels.
USM added cushion to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Kristin Pilgrim homered to left field which gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead for the win.
Pilgrim led the way for the Golden Eagles going 2-of-3 at the plate with one homerun.
The Colonels will be back in action when they travel to Conway to face the University of Central Arkansas Sugarbears in a three game series starting on Saturday at noon.
