Nicholls, now riding a four-game winning streak, swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this weekend with its 6-3 victory over the Islanders on Saturday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels (9-7, 4-2) scored six runs on eight hits in the win, while the Islanders (4-15, 0-6) tallied three runs on 14 hits.
"I thought that our entire pitching staff did an outstanding job this weekend, especially today," said head coach Chip Durham. "Our bullpen really got the job done, pitching in some tight spots tonight. The entire team played with a great deal of poise this weekend, and I'm very proud of them."
Picking up the win in relief was sophomore Drew Erwin who tossed 0.2 innings, and got the Colonels out of a jam in the fifth inning after taking over for starting pitcher junior Tyler Minto. Senior Ross Larson picked up the save for Nicholls, entering the game in the sixth with the go ahead run at the plate. It was Larson's first save of the season.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi drew first blood in the top of the third, scoring a run to take the 1-0 lead, however Nicholls bounced back in the bottom half scoring three. All three runs came from a triple by junior Keith Kulbeth to centerfield that plated juniors Kevin Schlegel and Chris Murrill. On the same play, Kulbeth was awarded home after a throwing error by the Islanders that sailed into the Colonel dugout to give Nicholls the 3-1 advantage.
The Islanders made a game of it, tying the game at three all in the fifth, however, the Colonels responded once again in the bottom half, adding two runs to retake the lead, 5-3. The first of the runs came on a RBI single up the middle by Kulbeth to plate Murrill, and junior Scott Moseley followed up with a RBI double to left center that brought home Kulbeth.
The Colonels added an insurance run in the eighth on a RBI triple by junior Blake Bergeron that plated junior Adam Miley. The Islanders failed to score in the top of the ninth, giving Nicholls the victory.
Leading Nicholls at the plate was Kulbeth, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Also having a multi-hit performance was Murrill who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Nicholls will put its four-game winning streak on the line against SEC foe Kentucky on Monday at Ray E. Didier Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
