THIBODAUX, La. -
The Nicholls State softball team pulled off back to back wins in the doubleheader against Central Arkansas on Sunday afternoon at Farris Field. The Colonels (19-10, 9-3 SLC) took the first game 6-2 and the second game 6-0 with the help of Lacey Gros pitching a no hitter against the UCA Sugarbears.
In the first game, Nicholls jumped out to an early 1-0 start when Lyndsay Mesh had an RBI single which sent Butler home in the top of the first inning.
UCA came back in the third to tie the game 1-1 when Rachel Baucom hit a single and later scored off an error from pitcher Audrey Wood.
Audrey Wood avenged her previous wild pitch when she contributed to a five run fifth inning by homering left for the grand slam, which gave the Colonels a 6-1 lead over the Sugarbears. UCA made the contest 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh.
Picking up the win for the Colonels was pitcher Audrey Wood. Wood (9-4) struck out five batters and gave up only five hits and two runs.
In the second match, the Colonels got the 6-0 shutout win over the Sugarbears thanks to the dominance of Lacey Gros on the diamond.
Gros (10-6) struck out eight batters and pitched a perfect game into the seventh inning; however, the perfect game was disrupted when Julie Essary reached first on a throwing error by Nicholls catcher Haley Burkett. Gros managed to close out the game with a no hitter.
Nicholls scored in each of the first four innings. The Colonels scored three runs in the third as Lyndsay Mesh led off with a homer and Kodi Butler's single earned her two RBI late in the inning.
Lyndsay Mesh went 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs and one RBI.
The Colonels will host the Texas State Lady Bobcats in conference play on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
