HOUSTON, Texas - Nicholls softball picked up its third and fourth consecutive wins on Sunday afternoon at Husky Field, defeating Houston Baptist 6-0 in the first game and 4-3 in the second contest.

The Colonels (23-11) got the first win of the day in large part due to a complete game shutout pitching performance by junior Lacey Gros. Gros fanned 11 while only allowing five hits in improving to 11-7 on the season.

The run support for Gros in the circle started in the second inning as true freshman Kayla Watterson singled in junior Karla Troxler from second. Troxler reached safely on a bunt single, and stole second before Watterson brought her around.

Nicholls added three more in the third with the first coming by way of a RBI single by senior Kodi Butler that scored sophomore Whitney Roan. Junior Audrey Wood followed up with a RBI single to bring around true freshman Megan Gaspard, and the inning was capped off with Butler scoring on a busted throw down to second by Houston Baptist catcher Lorin Leatherwood. Leatherwood was trying to gun down Wood who successfully stole second.

The Colonels tacked on two more in the top of the seventh, giving them the 6-0 advantage heading into the bottom half of the inning. The Huskies (11-14) failed to score in their half, which lifted the Colonels to the 6-0 win.

Nicholls had five players with multiple hits in the win that included Gaspard, Butler, Wood, Troxler and senior Danielle Clayton. Butler, Wood, Clayton, Watterson and junior Lyndsay Mesh all had a RBI in the win.

In the second game, both teams headed into the last inning tied at two. Nicholls bats came alive in the seventh, scoring two runs on a two RBI double to right field by Wood. Wood's double brought home Gaspard and Roan to give Nicholls the 4-2 advantage heading into the bottom half of the inning.

Houston Baptist scored one run early on in the inning, and threatened to take the game into extras before Wood got the final out with the game-tying run on first base.

Leading Nicholls at the plate and in the circle was Wood, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and pitched the complete game, striking out two while scattering five hits and allowing three runs. Wood improved to 12-4 with the decision.

Nicholls will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Southern at 5 p.m. at the Colonel Softball Complex.
