THIBODAUX, La. -
The Colonels baseball team improved to 4-5 Wednesday night with a 7-0 win over LSU-Alexandria at Ray E. Didier Field.
Second baseman Keith Kulbeth (Opelousas, La./Westminister Christian Academy) went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in an RBI, while catcher Kevin Schlegel (Oklahoma City, Okla./Northeast Texas CC) turned in a 2-for-2 performance with an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman lefthander Ryan Cooper (Sulphur, La./Sulphur) picked up the win for the Colonels in his first collegiate start, holding the Generals scoreless through four innings. The 6-4 newcomer fanned three and gave up two hits.
The Colonel bullpen combined to give up just two hits through the remaining five innings, striking out six hitters. Colonel pitchers did not issue a walk on the night.
Nicholls got on the board early, plating two runs in the first thanks to LSUA errors.
In the third, junior Adam Miley (Baton Rouge, La./Bossier Parish CC) singled through the right side, scoring left fielder Drew Snider (Collinsville, Miss./Meridian CC).
The Colonels added three in the fourth, stringing together three hits and taking advantage of another error by the Generals as Schlegel, Kulbeth and freshman Jacob Knight (Thibodaux, La./E.D. White Catholic) all came in to score for Nicholls.
Nicholls opens Southland Conference play this weekend, traveling to Beaumont to face Lamar for three games.
