Box Score
BEAUMONT, Texas -
Lamar scored two runs in the bottom of the first, getting all the runs it would need to claim an 8-1 win over Nicholls (5-7, 1-2 SLC) Sunday in the rubber game of the opening weekend Southland Conference play at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Designated hitter Adam Miley (Baton Rouge, La./Bossier Parish CC) went 2-for-4, driving in the Colonels' only run of the day.
After finding themselves down 8-0 heading into the eighth, Nicholls mounted a small rally, loading the bases as centerfielder Chris Murrill (Mobile, Ala./Alabama Southern CC) and second baseman Keith Kulbeth (Opelousas, La./Westminister Christian Academy) drew back-to-back walks and rightfielder Scott Moseley (Enterprise, Miss./Meridian CC) was hit by a pitch. Miley then drove an RBI single to left field to put the Colonels on the board, but couldn't muster any more run support.
Colonel starter Tyler Minto (Mobile, Ala./Alabama Southern CC) went 3.1 innings, falling to 0-1 as he gave up five runs on six hits. The righthander issued two walks and struck out one on the day.
Minto was relieved in the fourth by righthander Jake Parrish (Alburquerque, N.M./Northeast Oklahoma State), who threw 2.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Righties Ross Larson (New Lenox, Ill./Lurleen B. Wallace CC) and Dale Dickerson (Calhoun, La./Southeast Missouri State) combined to close out the game for the Colonels on the mound, fanning four and not allowing a hit.
The Colonels will host Southern at 6 p.m. in midweek, non-conference action, before hosting SLC opponent Texas A&M-Corpus Christi March 13-16.
