Final Stats

NACGODOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin scored three runs in the bottom of the first, and one more in the third to defeat Nicholls 4-3 at Hoya Field on Saturday night.

The Colonels (29-17, 14-8) fell behind early in the first inning, giving up a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first to the Lady Jacks (24-21, 13-9). SFA's Kayla Gutowski went yard over the left center field fence to give the Lady Jacks the 3-0 lead through one complete.

The score remained that way until the top of the third when Nicholls cracked the scoreboard on a fielding error by SFA second baseman Ashley Struchtemeyer that allowed true freshman Megan Gaspard to score. Gaspard got a two-out single in her at bat.

SFA responded in the bottom half, scoring a run on a RBI double by Struchtemeyer down the leftfield line to increase its lead to 4-1 through three complete.

Nicholls added a run in the fourth and in the sixth to come within a run heading into the final inning, but could not send the game to extras. SFA notched the 4-3 win as a result.

Junior Lacey Gros picked up the loss, falling to 15-12 on the season. Gros tossed the complete game, giving up four runs - all earned - on eight hits while fanning nine in the process. She also only issued only two walks.

As a team, Nicholls left eight runners on base in the loss. Leading the Colonels at the plate was Gaspard and true freshman Kayla Watterson with each recording two hits. Watterson also provided a double in the loss, while Gaspard had a run and a RBI.

Nicholls and Stephen F. Austin will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
