Final Stats

THIBODAUX, La. - Nicholls softball suffered a pair of losses to Sam Houston State on Saturday afternoon at the Colonel Softball Complex, dropping the first game 4-2 and losing the second 8-2.

The series finale is set for tomorrow at Noon with seniors Haley Burkett, Kodi Butler, and Danielle Clayton playing their final game at the Colonel Softball Complex. They will be recognized with their families before the game.

In the first game on Saturday, the Bearkats (25-22, 14-12) put a run on the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth to take the 2-0 lead. The Colonels (30-21, 14-12) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth due to a RBI double to left centerfield by junior Lyndsay Mesh that plated senior Danielle Clayton all the way from first base.

The score would remain 2-1 until the top of the seventh when Sam Houston State put a two-spot on the board to extend its lead to 4-1 heading into the bottom of the last inning. Nicholls did make a valiant effort to climb back into the game in the bottom half, scoring a run via a RBI single by Clayton through the left side to plate Butler from second. However, that is as close as the Colonels would come, falling 4-2 in the game.

Dubbed with the loss was junior Lacey Gros, falling to 16-13 on the season. Gros fanned 13 in the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and issued five walks.

In the second game, Sam Houston State drew first blood, scoring a run in the second and the third to take the 2-0 lead. The score remained that way until the Bearkats put a six-spot on the scoreboard in the top half of the fifth inning to go up 8-0. The Colonels scored three in the bottom half, getting RBI singles from Butler, Clayton and Mesh to cut into the lead, 8-3.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh when Nicholls tried to mount a rally, scoring a run on a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield by Clayton, but it would not be enough as Mesh ended the game with a fly out to leftfield.

Suffering the loss in the circle for Nicholls was junior Audrey Wood, tossing 4.1 innings and giving up eight runs on nine hits. Wood fell to 14-8 on the season with the decision.

Leading the Colonels at the plate in the loss was Butler with a 2-for-4 showing that included a RBI and two runs. Butler also notched her 36th career double, placing her tied for fourth on Nicholls all-time list.

The Colonels and Bearkats will square off at Noon tomorrow to close out the series. Fans can follow the game live statistically on GameTracker at www.geauxcolonels.com.
