Final Stats
THIBODAUX, La. -
Sam Houston State scored two runs in the first inning, giving it all the run support needed to defeat Nicholls 2-1 at the Colonel Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Bearkats (26-22, 15-12) got two runs in the first on back-to-back RBI doubles by Whitney Wilson and Casie Everitt to take the early 2-0 lead. However after the two-hit two-run first inning, SHSU only managed one hit over the next six, but it didn't matter in the final outcome.
Nicholls (30-22, 14-12) did pick up a run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single through the left side by senior Kodi Butler. Butler, along with senior Haley Burkett and Danielle Clayton, was playing her final home game of her collegiate career.
The Colonels did threaten in the bottom of the seventh as Burkett got a one-out double down the leftfield line, but that is as close as Nicholls would get to scoring.
"I'm very proud of my senior class and the leadership that they have shown," said Head Coach Jenny Parsons. "We have dug ourselves a whole now, and I know the seniors and upperclassmen understand what we have to accomplish to make the conference tournament."
Junior Lacey Gros was pegged with the loss despite only giving up two runs - both earned - on three hits and fanning six through seven innings. Gros now stands at 16-14 on the season with the decision. The Bearkats Brandi Crnkovic got the win, tossing 4.1 innings and giving up one run on one hit. Morgan Mikulin relieved her in the fifth inning on her way to getting her fifth save of the season.
Leading Nicholls at the plate was Butler as she finished the day 1-for-4 with a RBI.
Nicholls will now have to fight for its postseason lives heading into its final regular season series at McNeese State this weekend. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
