Final Stats
NEW ORLEANS, La. -
Nicholls scored nine runs between the first two innings, and cruised to an 11-5 victory over New Orleans on Wednesday night at Maestri Field.
"I'm very proud of our guys for getting this win tonight," said Head Coach Chip Durham. "Our batters were very patient at the plate, while our pitching staff did an excellent job of keeping their composure."
The Colonels (18-25) were led by junior Scott Moseley at the plate with a 2-for-5 showing that included four RBI, two runs scored and a home run, while senior Josh Swenson put forth a three RBI performance to help led Nicholls to its first victory since beating then No.1 ranked LSU on Wednesday April 15.
Dubbed with the win for Nicholls was freshman Zephan Rochelle, tossing two scoreless and hitless innings in relief. It was Rochelle's first win of his collegiate career.
The win also snaps a seven-game slide for the Colonels before heading into an important conference series this weekend against Southeastern La.
"This win was good for us. It is just what we needed heading into our three-game series at Southeastern," added Durham. "It is good to get back on track and build on our confidence."
The Privateers (17-27) used a total of nine pitchers in the game with starter Cory Myers taking the loss. Myers tossed 1.1 innings, allowing five runs - all earned - on two hits and three walks while failing to record a strikeout.
Nicholls and New Orleans were tied 3-3 after one complete, but the second inning belonged to the Colonels, scoring six runs on two hits and an error. The inning's first hit came off the bat of Swenson who drove in two runs on a double to right center, which was followed by Moseley's bomb that left the yard over the left centerfield fence to bring home three.
The final run of the second came on an error by UNO catcher Kyle Moldonado trying to catch junior Keith Kulbeth stealing third. Moldonado's throw sailed into left field, allowing Kulbeth to jog home for the score.
UNO popped back with a run in the bottom half to make the score 9-4, but would only manage one run for the remainder of the game to lose.
Nicholls will pick up action this weekend against Southeastern La., playing in Hammond on Friday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
