NATCHITOCHES, La. -
The Colonels scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but were unable to overcome an early 4-0 deficit, falling 5-2 to Northwestern State Friday night in the first game of a three-game series at Brown-Stroud Field.
Rightfielder Scott Moseley (Enterprise, Miss./Meridian CC) led off the ninth with a triple to center and scored on an infield ground out to put the Colonels (11-16, 5-8 SLC) on the board.
Two batters later, second baseman Keith Kulbeth (Opelousas, La./Westminister Christian Academy) knocked a single up the middle. First baseman Tyler Minto (Mobile, Ala./Alabama Southern CC) drew a two-out walk and catcher Jason Dennis (Mobile, Ala./Alabama Southern CC) followed with a basehit of his own that plated Kulbeth, cutting the Demon lead to three.
Northwestern State's first four batters reached base and scored in the first inning to give the Demons a 4-0 lead.
The Demons (13-12, 7-5 SLC) only scored once more in the game - a solo homerun in the sixth - but Nicholls couldn't produce the runs necessary to claim the lead.
Righthander Lance Dupuis (Crowley, La./Lurleen B. Wallace CC) falls to 2-3 on the season with the loss for Nicholls. The senior was responsible for all five Demon runs, giving up 10 hits through 6.1 innings of work.
Reliever Dale Dickerson (Calhoun, La./Southeast Missouri State) threw 1.2 hitless innings out of the bullpen for the Colonels.
Nicholls and Northwestern State will play game two of the series Saturday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
