SAN MARCOS, Texas -
Nicholls held a one run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but it would not be enough as Texas State scored two to get the 6-5 win at Bobcat Baseball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Colonels (18-31, 8-22) pumped out a total of five runs on 17 hits on the day, while the Bobcats (37-12, 23-6) had six runs on 13 hits. Texas State had three errors to Nicholls one.
Leading Nicholls at the plate in the loss was junior catcher junior Jason Dennis with a 4-for-5 showing that included three doubles and a run scored. Senior Ross Larson suffered the loss for the Colonels, falling to 1-7 on the season after tossing a third and giving up two runs - both earned - on three hits.
Nicholls cracked the scoreboard first, adding a run in the second via a double play ball hit by junior Beau Faulk that scored Dennis from third. Dennis led off the inning with a double.
The Colonels added another in the top of fourth on a fielding error by Texas State pitcher Zach Tritz that scored junior Zach Tisdale from third to give Nicholls the 2-0 advantage after three and a half complete. Texas State fired back in the bottom half to score one, making the score 2-1 in favor of Nicholls.
Nicholls continued its scoring onslaught in the top of the sixth with two runs courtesy of a fielding error by Texas State on a hard hit ball by junior Drew Snider. The error scored junior Chris Murrill and Faulk to give Nicholls the 4-1 lead. In the bottom half, the Bobcats scored four to take the 5-4 lead after six complete.
Nicholls then retook the lead in the top of the eighth via a two RBI single to right field by junior Keith Kulbeth that plated Snider and junior Brady Bourque. After a scoreless bottom half, Nicholls held a 6-5 lead heading into the ninth.
However, Texas State scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on back-to-back doubles by the Bobcats to get the series win and sweep.
Nicholls will be back in action on Thursday against McNeese State at Ray E. Didier Field for 6:30 p.m.
