Final Stats
SAN MARCOS, Texas -
Nicholls baseball fell to Texas State, 11-9, in 11 innings at Bobcat Baseball Stadium on Friday night.
"I thought that we played well, well enough to get a win," said Head Coach Chip Durham. "I'm very proud of my team. I'm confident that we can bounce back for tomorrow's game."
Leading the Colonels at the plate in the loss were juniors Keith Kulbeth and Chris Murrill with both recording three-hit games. Kulbeth added two RBI, while Murrill had two runs.
Through the first six innings, the Colonels held a 6-3 advantage in large part due to a five-run third. Of the runs scored in the inning, the final two came off the bat of Kulbeth, singling to right center to score junior Scott Moseley and senior Josh Swenson. The other three were fed by two Texas State errors.
Nicholls (18-30, 8-20) then scored a run in the top half of the fourth with Murrill coming around on a double play ball hit by junior Drew Snider. Heading into the bottom half of the fourth, the Colonels led 7-3.
Texas State (35-12, 21-6) then stormed back to score four runs in the bottom half to tie the game at seven apiece. Both teams traded runs in the fifth, but the Colonels took the lead in the top of the sixth on RBI double to right field by Swenson that brought home junior Brady Bourque from second base. The Bobcats failed to score in the bottom half of the sixth inning, giving the Colonels the 9-8 advantage.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the ninth when Texas State tied it up to send it into extra innings. Both teams failed to score in the tenth, but the Bobcats got a walk-off two run homerun from Ben Theriot in the 11th to give Texas State the victory.
Dubbed with the loss in the game was senior Ross Larson, pitching three innings in relief and giving up three runs on four hits. Larson fanned three of the 13 batters he faced. Tyler Brundridge got the win, throwing four innings, allowing only one run on three hits and fanning seven. Brundridge improved to 4-1, while Larson fell to 1-6.
