THIBODAUX, La. -
The Nicholls State University women's basketball team shot a better percentage from the floor and from three-point range then UTSA, but it was the Roadrunners who claimed the 58-49 win on Wednesday night in Stopher Gym.
The Colonels shot 30.4 percent (17-of-56) from field goal range and were 40.0 percent (6-of-15) from downtown, surpassing the Roadrunners in both phases - 35.2 percent (19-of-54) in field goals and 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from three-point land - but UTSA made due from the charity stripe, cashing in on 25 Nicholls' fouls at free throw line by making 17-of-28 free shots. Nicholls made 9-of-16 from the free throw line in the loss.
"We battled from start to finish," said Head Coach DoBee Plaisance. "We are getting better with every game and we are showing improvement as a young team. I have got to give UTSA credit; they have a lot of talented and athletic players, and are well coached."
The Colonels (3-11, 0-2 SLC) were led by junior Ricshanda Bickham in the loss with 25 points, while the only other player in double-digits was true freshman Alisha Allen with 10. The Roadrunners (8-7, 2-0 SLC) countered with four players over the decade mark with Judy Jones leading the way with 15 points.
Nicholls went into the locker room at halftime trailing 27-25 after both teams exchanged leads 11 times and tying another six. The Colonels led by as many as six - 11-5 with 14:26 to play - but were outscored 22-14 from that point forward in the first half.
The Roadrunners then opened up the second half on an 11-4 run to lead by 10 - 39-29 - with 16 minutes left in the half. The Colonels cut the lead to three points midway through the half, but that is as close as they would come in the loss.
Nicholls will be back in action on Saturday at conference foe Stephen F. Austin (6-6, 1-0 SLC) with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
