Final Stats

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Nicholls State University men's and women's tennis teams picked up wins over Xavier (La.) on Saturday afternoon with the men winning 8-1, while the women notched a 9-0 victory.

Both matches were scored with NAIA rules due to Xavier (La.) being the home team.

The only loss taken by the Colonels (2-1) in singles play was senior Vlad Popa in No. 2 singles as he fell 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5). Popa was not the only Colonel to have his set decided in three sets, as senior Phenyo Matong and junior Eric Fisher had to go to the tie breaker as well.

The women (1-0) were playing their first match of the season, and emerged with the 9-0 victory. Only one match had to be decided in a third set, and senior Sanja Stanojcic got the 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 come from behind victory at No.4 singles.

Also getting an encouraging win was redshirt sophomore Melissa Harrison, playing in her first competition after being sidelined for most of last year. Harrison prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in No.6 singles.

The men will travel to South Alabama on Monday for a 2 p.m. tilt, while the women will suit up again on Thursday as they travel to Louisiana-Lafayette.
