MOBILE, Ala. - The Nicholls State University softball team only hit nine homeruns last season, but started off the 2010 campaign with three in an 8-6 win over Sun Belt Conference foe South Alabama on Friday night at Jaguar Field.

The Colonels (1-0) trailed 3-2 heading into the top of the sixth frame, and got a three-run bomb over the right field fence courtesy of sophomore Kayla Watterson to give Nicholls the 5-3 advantage heading into the bottom half of the inning. The inning was powered by a single to left field by senior Audrey Wood.

Nicholls held South Alabama scoreless in the bottom half, and continued to its scoring entourage in the top of the seventh with another three-run homer via Wood down the left field line. Wood's homerun brought home sophomore Laine Strickland and senior Natalie Travasos, giving the Colonels the 8-3 lead heading into the bottom of the final inning.

The Jaguars (2-3) didn't lie down in their final frame, scoring three runs on three hits before senior Lacey Gros recorded the final out to improve to 1-0 on the season. Gros was awarded the win after tossing the complete game, giving up six runs - all earned - on eight hits. She also fanned five in the win.

Leading the Colonels at the plate was Wood with a 2-for-4 showing that included a homerun and three RBIs. Watterson and Strickland also went yard, giving the two their first collegiate homeruns of their careers.

Nicholls will be back in action tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Belmont and then at 11:30 a.m. against UAB in the USA Invitational.
