Colonels Take Down Conference Power Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Nicholls State University men's tennis team earned a hard fought 4-3 victory over Lamar, propelling the squad to its fifth consecutive win on the season.

The Colonels (5-1, 1-0 Southland) won the doubles point with the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup securing it as the duo of freshman Dmitry Kozinov and senior Phenyo Matong defeated Marton Horvath and James Thorp 8-6, and junior Eric Fisher and freshman Roy Knight took down Richard Filkuka and Diego Snyder, 8-1.

With the doubles point in hand, Nicholls went to singles action and senior junior Radu Ionescu got a hard fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Filkuka in No. 1 singles to set the tone.

Popa fell in his match, but Matong and Fisher picked up the slack getting victories to secure the match win. Matong clinched a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Dusan Savkovic, while Fisher's win took a little extra effort, going three sets to defeat Ermilov 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.

Unfortunately, Knight suffered his first loss in singles play of his collegiate career, falling 6-4, 6-1 to Snyder. Knight currently stands at 5-1 on the season at No. 6 singles.

Nicholls will be back in action today at 11 a.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
