Colonels Come Close but Fall to Islanders

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Nicholls State University women's tennis team fell to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 4-3 on Sunday afternoon, despite impressive singles wins by juniors Florina Nosca and Melissa Harrison, and senior Sanja Stanojcic.

Nicholls (1-2, 0-2 Southland) started off the match by losing the doubles point with the club's only victory coming at the No. 2 spot. The duo of junior Natalia Zamora and sophomore Sumana Kalyanasundarm took down Bianca Discordia and LeAnne Mascall for the Colonels' only victory in doubles action.

After doubles, the Colonels went to work in singles play with Nosca posting an impressive win at the No. 1 spot over All-Conference player Mirna Cicak. Nosca defeated Cicak 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

Zamora and Kalyanasundarm both fell in the proceeding singles matches, while Stanojcic posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Adrienne Kovacs at the No. 4 slot. The Colonels final win in singles came from Harrison who took down Nadia Filmalter handedly, 6-1, 6-1.

Losing what proved to be the decisive singles match was true freshman Tatiana Denezhkina at No. 5 as she was on the wrong end of a hard fought three-set loss to Mascall. Mascall won 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

The Colonels will be back in action on Saturday Feb. 27 against Texas State in San Marcos. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
