THIBODAUX, La. -
The Nicholls State University softball team rode the arm of senior hurler Lacey Gros to a 2-1 victory over Southwestern Athletic Conference member Alcorn State on Tuesday afternoon at the Lady Braves Diamond.
Gros tossed a complete game, fanning a total of 11 batters in the win to improve to 2-0 on the season in the circle. Gros only allowed two hits and the lone run came via a bases loaded walk in the sixth.
Providing the run support for the Colonels (4-1) in the game was senior second baseman Natalie Travasos in the first inning when she reached on a single up the middle, then stole second on the ensuing pitch that led to her scoring on a throwing error.
Nicholls only mustered one-run in the inning, going up 1-0 and holding that lead through one complete. The Colonels built their lead in the second via a double to centerfield by freshman catcher Jackie Burri that scored freshman designated player Lauren Batiz from second. Batiz fueled the inning with a leadoff single up the middle.
The Colonels held a 2-0 advantage until the bottom of the sixth when Gros gave up a bases loaded walk to bring the Lady Braves within one, 2-1. However, Gros got the Colonels out of the jam, getting a fly out to centerfield to end the inning.
Nicholls failed to score in the top half of the seventh, and despite Alcorn State having runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, Gros kept the club in check by getting the necessary outs to lift the Colonels to victory.
Recording multi-hits in the win for the Colonels was Batiz, Travasos, sophomore Kayla Watterson, all going 2-for-3 in the victory.
Nicholls will pick up action this weekend in the Magic City Classic, hosted by Samford University. First pitch for the Colonels in the tournament is set for 11 a.m. on Friday against Troy University.
