NEW ORLEANS, La. -
The Nicholls State University men's tennis team continued its tirade among regional foes, dominating Tulane 7-0 on Thursday afternoon.
Nicholls (6-2) had lost its previous match to reigning SLC Champions Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and rebounded nicely with the shutout victory over Conference USA member Tulane (2-4).
The Colonels got wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, all in three sets, while the other three spots were decided handedly by the Colonels.
Junior Radu Ionescu won his match at No. 1 over previously undefeated Joe Young, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0, while senior Phenyo Matong defeated Shaye Wali at No. 2, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0. It was the first time Matong had played from the No. 2 slot in singles in his collegiate career.
Also fighting through for a win in three sets was senior Vlad Popa at No. 3, taking down Rodrigo Rappaccioli, 6-0, 0-6, 6-1.
The Colonels also won all of the doubles matches, including a hard fought battle at No. 1 with Ionescu and Popa teaming up to get the 8-7 (7-2) win.
Nicholls will be back in action on Wednesday March 3 against Jackson State.
