BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Nicholls State University softball team broke a scoreless affair in the top of the sixth with two runs courtesy a senior Lyndsay Mesh homerun, but Troy responded with three in the bottom half taking the lead and the 3-2 win in the Magic City Classic on Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Field.

Mesh's homerun brought in sophomore Megan Gaspard, and gave the Colonels (6-2) their ninth homerun of the season. Nicholls hit a total of nine homeruns as a team in 2009.

Troy (8-4) scored two of its three runs in the bottom half of the sixth on Colonel mistakes that included a past ball and a wild pitch.

Leading the Colonels in the loss was Mesh with a 1-for-3 showing that included two RBI and a run, while true freshman Ashton Bennett was charged with the loss, tossing 5.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out five in the process. Bennett falls to 0-2 on the season with the loss.

Nicholls will pick up action tomorrow with a 11 a.m. tilt against UAB. Both the teams have already met this season with the Trailblazers winning 3-1 last weekend in the USA Invitational.
