Final Stats

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Nicholls State University softball closed out its second consecutive tournament with a loss to UAB, falling 7-2 to the Trailblazers on Sunday afternoon in the Magic City Classic hosted by Samford.

Nicholls (6-3) lost to UAB (9-4) last weekend in the USA Invitational to close out the tournament. The Colonels fell behind early, looking up at a 5-0 deficit through two and a half innings before getting on the board in the bottom of the second when freshman catcher Jackie Burri hit a two-run homerun. Burri's homerun - her first collegiate homerun - scored senior Lyndsay Mesh who powered the inning with a leadoff single.

Unfortunately, that was the only run support senior Lacey Gros would get in the circle, coming on in relief of junior Carlee Winkelmann in the second inning, and the Colonel bats failed to bring in any more runs as Nicholls went on to lose.

Credited with the loss was Winkelmann, falling to 1-1 on the season. Winkelmann gave up six runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work in the circle.

Leading the Colonels at the plate was Burri with a 1-for-3 showing that included a homerun and two RBI.

Nicholls will be back in action this weekend Tuesday when they travel to conference and regional rival Southeastern La. First pitch for Tuesday's doubleheader is set for 5 p.m.
