THIBODAUX - Four Colonels recorded two or more hits, led by Kasey Culverson's 3-for-4, 4 RBI performance as the Nicholls State University baseball team (3-3) rattled off 13 hits en route to a 15-11 win over Houston Baptist (1-4) on Sunday at Ray E. Didier Field in the final game of the 2010 Big Boy Classic Presented by Hampton Inn.

The Colonels took advantage of six costly HBU errors as Nicholls rallied from a 4-1 deficit after one and half innings.

The Huskies took advantage of a pair of Colonel errors to score three runs, including two unearned runs, in the top of the first. However, freshman left hander Brent Bonvillian soon settled in and picked up his defense by delivering 5.1 IP of six hit ball while walking four and striking out four.

HBU did score six runs off of the freshman southpaw, however, in a game that featured 11 errors (five by the Colonels) only two of those runs found their way into the earned column.

With Bonvillian keeping the Huskies at bay, the Colonels battled back with one in the bottom of the second before taking their first lead of the day thanks to a four-run second. This time, it was Nicholls capitalizing on HBU errors as the Huskies made a pair of errors in the second to keep the Colonels alive. Junior outfielder Bear Comer's two-run double was the biggest blow as Nicholls plated four for a 5-4 lead.

However, the Huskies battled back and tied the game in the top of the third with an RBI ground out to tie the score before Nicholls took the lead for good in the bottom half.

A walk, a hit and two more Huskie errors led to a run for the Colonels as Nicholls took a 6-5 lead into the fourth. After Bonvillian turned HBU away in the top of the fourth, Adam Miley made it 7-5 in the bottom half on an RBI groundout of his own.

Nicholls finally broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth by stringing together four hits, two hit batsmen and two walks to go with two more HBU errors to plate eight unearned runs in the fifth and go up 15-6.

That would be all the Colonels would need, but the Huskies refused to go quietly, threatening with one more in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the top of the ninth before Drew Erwin came on and earned a one-pitch save to get the final out with the tying run on deck and preserve the 15-11 win.

With the win, the Colonels returned to the .500 mark and claimed the 2010 Big Boy Classic Presented by Hampton Inn Tournament Championship.

The Colonels will return to action on Tuesday when they open a two-game series against Arkansas-Monticello at Ray E. Didier Field.
