Final Stats
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Junior guard/forward Anatoly Bose led the Colonels with 11 points and sophomore guard/forward Fred Hunter added ten. However, it wasn't enough for the Nicholls State University men's basketball team (7-15, 3-6 Southland Conference) as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders shot 62.2 percent from the floor en route to handing the Colonels a 71-46 loss on Saturday night in the Islanders' Homecoming game.
With the loss, the Colonels fall to 0-5 on the road in Southland Conference action and 0-4 all-time against TAMUCC.
Eight different Islanders found the scoring column, and TAMUCC saw three double-digit scoring performances. Demond Watt led all scorers with 17 points and was backed up by Terrence Jones' 13 points and 11 more from Marcus Hammonds. All told, the Islanders shot 23-for-37 from the field, including hitting eight of 13 three point attempts (61.5 percent).
The Islanders never trailed on the night, but the Colonels stayed close in the first half cutting to within two when freshman Justin Ayers' layup made it 8-6 with 15:32 remaining.
However, the Islanders continued to build momentum in front of an announced Homecoming crowd of 3,010. TAMUCC stretched its lead to 19 with 21 seconds left in the first before Ayers hit a three at the end of the half to make it 34-18 at the break.
The second half featured more of the same for the Colonels. The Islanders put together an 8-0 run to start the second half to claim a 23 point lead. Nicholls rallied and cut the deficit to 42-27. However, Dominic Friend's layup at the 15:03 mark still had the Colonels down by 15.
However, the Islanders matched the Colonels shot for shot over the next ten minutes before closing with a 14-4 run over the final 4:36 to put the game away with the final 71-46 margin.
The Colonels will now return to Thibodaux to host Southland Conference West Division leader Sam Houston State on Wednesday night at Stopher Gym.
