Final Stats

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Nicholls State University softball team struggled against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday, being outscored 9-0 between the two games at Chapman Field.

Nicholls (10-7, 4-4 Southland) lost the first game 3-0, and fell 6-0 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (18-7, 5-3 Southland) in the second contest.

In the first game loss, the Colonels did not advance a runner past second base, and only mustered three hits in the game. Taking the loss for Nicholls was senior Lacey Gros, falling to 5-3 on the season. Gros surrendered three runs, all earned, on four hits, while being held to a season low three strikeouts in a start.

The Islanders broke a scoreless affair in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back RBI hits to take a 2-0 lead. The club would tack on another in the bottom of the sixth via a called illegal pitch by Gros to make the advantage 3-0, and a scoreless seventh by the Colonels granted the win to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

In the second game, Nicholls still could not find a run while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was in high supply with a 6-0 victory. The Islanders started with two in the bottom of the first courtesy of two Colonel errors to make the score 2-0 after one complete.

The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Islanders put a four-spot on the scoreboard to take a 6-0 lead that would hold true for the win.

Suffering the loss in the game for the Colonels was junior Carlee Winkelmann to fall to 2-2 on the season. Winkelmann pitched 5.1 innings before being relieved by senior Audrey Wood, giving up six runs - four earned - on six hits and not recording one strikeout.

Leading the Colonels at the plate was Wood with the team's only multi-hit performance with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.

The two teams will square off tomorrow at 12 p.m. for the series finale.
