THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team struggled against South Alabama on Tuesday afternoon in the Colonel Softball Complex, falling 6-2 in the midweek non-conference match up.

"South Alabama is a good hitting team, and they hit the ball well today," said Head Coach Jenny Parsons. "Our focus is now on this weekend's conference series against UTA."

The Colonels (11-8) fell behind early against the Jaguars (11-9) with South Alabama scoring in the top half of the first on a throwing error by senior Natalie Travasos that plated Christin Crocker after she tripled to right centerfield.

The score would remain 1-0 until the top of the fourth when South Alabama went to work again, putting a run on the scoreboard to make the advantage 2-0 heading into the bottom half.

In the bottom half, Nicholls put a one-spot on the board via a Travasos RBI single that scored sophomore Lauren Martinez from second. The Colonels would not score again in the inning to trail 2-1 through five innings complete.

Then South Alabama blew the game open in the top of the sixth by scoring four runs on three hits, and Nicholls would never recover in the game to go on to lose 6-2.

The Colonels attempted a rally in the bottom half, however, only brought one run in during the inning with bases loaded and one out.

Taking the loss for the Colonels in the circle was true freshman Ashton Bennett as she pitched 5.1 innings on the afternoon, giving up six runs - four earned - on eight hits. She also fanned five in the loss. Beth Pilgrim got the win for South Alabama, improving to 8-4 on the season.

Leading Nicholls at the plate in the loss was sophomore Kayla Watterson with a 2-for-2 showing at the plate. Travasos also made some noise with the bat, going 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Nicholls will resume action at home this weekend when they host conference foe UT-Arlington for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch on Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
