Box Score
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders (9-7, 2-2 Southland Conference) lineup took full advantage of the 30-plus MPH winds at Chapman Field, meanwhile, the Islanders' Roy Ferdin kept the Colonel bats at bay as the Nicholls State University baseball team (11-6, 2-2 Southland Conference) dropped the opener of the three-game Southland Conference series by a score of 14-3 on Friday.
The Islanders totaled 17 hits, including three home runs, and five Islanders recorded two or more hits.
Nicholls got off to a fast start, plating three runs in the first two innings. Blake Bergeron drove in Bear Comer with a sacrifice fly in the first, and the Colonels got a pair of runs in the second thanks to RBI singles by Keith Kulbeth and Comer.
However, that was all the damage that Nicholls could muster against Ferdin as the Islander starter kept the Colonels off the board the rest of the day.
Meanwhile, the Islanders got to work on offense with two in the bottom of the first and three in the second. TAMUCC broke the game open with a six-run fifth and plated two more in the seventh to invoke the Southland Conference's ten-run rule.
Adam Miley provided one of the few highlights for the Colonels by recorded his third two-hit game in his last four contets.
The Colonels will look to rebound on Saturday in game two. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Chapman Field.
