HAMMOND, La. -
The Nicholls State University softball team fell 5-3 to Southeastern La. on Tuesday evening at North Oak Park.
The Colonels (6-4, 0-1 Southland) were led by true freshman Lauren Batiz in the loss, going 2-for-4 with a homerun, RBI and a run.
Nicholls broke the scoreless affair in the top of the third on a throwing error by Southeastern La. that allowed sophomore Laine Strickland to score to give the Colonels the 1-0 lead.
The lead, however, was short lived as the Lions responded in the bottom half to the third, scoring four runs with three of them coming on back-to-back homeruns to take a 4-1 advantage. Batiz leadoff the top of the fourth with a solo-homerun over the left field fence, putting the Colonels within two, 4-2, midway though the fourth.
The Lions (4-6, 1-0 Southland) made up for Batiz's homerun with a run in the bottom half of the fourth via a bases loaded walk to make the score 5-2 through four complete.
Nicholls made a last ditch effort in the top of the seventh with a solo-homerun by senior Lynsday Mesh, but it is as close as the Colonels would come in the 5-3 loss.
Charged with the loss for the Colonels was senior Lacey Gros, falling to 3-2 on the season. Gros had eight strikeouts in the decision.
Nicholls and Southeastern La. will resume action tomorrow in the three-game series with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
