Colonels Softball Completes Three Game Sweep of Mavericks

THIBODAUX, Louisiana - With the score knotted at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning , senior shortstop Lyndsay Mesh delivered a one-out walkoff double scoring Laynie Strickland to give the Colonels a 3-2 victory and gave Nicholls a three-game sweep over Texas-Arlington at the Colonels Softball Complex.

With the win Nicholls improved to 14-8 overall and 8-4 in Southland Conference action while Texas-Arlington fell to 15-13 and 6-5.

"This was a huge win for us," said head coach Jenny Parsons. "I am very proud of how we responded today. We struggled early at the plate but we were able to remain patient and deliver at the end of the game."

As in the first two games of the series, the Colonels struck early by taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second Kayla Watterson reached by getting hit by a pitch and later scored on a pass ball.

The Mavericks responded by scoring one run in the top of the third inning and added another urn in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.

The remainder of the game would be a pitching duel between Colonels senior Lacey Gros and the Mavericks Teri Lyles.

The Colonels, who had only recorded one hit prior to the seventh inning, came through and was able to force the game into extra innings when Ashton Bennett came through with a one out single and later scored on a double by Natalie Travasos to tie the game at 2-2.

Gros sat down the Mavericks lineup in order in the top half of the eighth and ninth inning and the Colonels would give her the run support she needed to pick up the victory in the bottom half of the ninth.

Strickland got the Colonels started with a one out single up the middle. Megan Gaspard kept the inning going by reaching on an infield error by the Mavericks third baseman. With runners on first and second and one out, Lyndsay Mesh delivered the walkoff double in right center gap scoring Strickland and giving the Colonels a 3-2 victory.

Lacey Gros improved her record to 7-3 with the win. Gros pitched nine innings and gave up six hits, walking two and fanning seven.

Teri Lyles dropped to 7-7 on the season after giving up three runs, six hits, walking two and striking out two.

Natalie Travasos led the Colonels at the plate going 1-for-1 with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings.

Samantha Chumchal led the Mavericks going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Colonels will return to action on Tuesday, March 23 at 6 p.m. when they travel to Baton Rouge to take on LSU.
