THIBODAUX, La. -
The Nicholls State University softball team captured a 5-4 victory over McNeese State on Sunday afternoon in the Colonel Softball Complex, and in the process won the series.
The Colonels (10-5, 4-2 Southland) got the win on Sunday in dramatic fashion over the Cowgirls (13-10, 4-2 Southland) , relying on a seventh inning walk-off RBI single by senior Lyndsay Mesh that scored senior Audrey Wood from third. Wood led off the inning with a triple.
"I'm so proud of our team to come out here and play the way they did today," said Head Coach Jenny Parsons. "To get this series win at home against one of the league's best is huge for us."
Getting the win for the Colonels in relief was senior Lacey Gros, improving to 5-2 on the season. Gros relieved true freshman Ashton Bennett in the sixth with no outs.
Nicholls scored first in the game, putting four on the scoreboard in the third with the first two coming on a two RBI single up the middle by sophomore Mandy Granger. Granger's RBI knock plated Mesh and Wood. The other two runs in the inning came via RBI singles by true freshman Lauren Batiz and sophomore Laine Strickland.
The Colonels 4-0 advantage was cut into in the top of the fifth with McNeese State scoring two runs to make the score 4-2. The score would stay that way until the Cowgirls put two more in the books in the top of the sixth to tie the score at four all.
Nicholls came up empty in the bottom half, and so did McNeese State in the top of the seventh.
The Colonels will be back in action against nationally ranked LSU on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
