THIBODAUX, La. -
The Nicholls State University softball team took two games on the chin against the Texas State Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Field, losing the first 8-0 in five innings and the second 7-6.
The Colonels (19-11, 11-6 Southland) were routed in the first game, only registering one hit in the 8-0 loss. Texas State (21-15, 16-4 Southland) had eight runs on seven hits in contest, winning in five innings. The only hit in the loss came from senior Lyndsay Mesh in the first inning, and the team went hitless through the remaining four to lose by the mercy rule
Getting the win the first game was Chandler Hall, improving to 14-8 on the season while senior Lacey Gros was dubbed with the loss. Gros gave up six runs - five earned - in three innings of work to fall to 10-4 on the season.
In the second game, Nicholls held a healthy 6-2 lead heading into the final frame, but surrendered five runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose 7-6. Suffering the loss in the second game was senior Audrey Wood, tossing the complete game and giving up seven runs on seven hits in seven innings.
Wood led the Colonels at the plate in the second game with a 2-for-4 performance that included two homeruns, two runs scored and five RBI, but it wasn't enough as the Nicholls fell to Texas State in the evening cap.
Both teams will resurface tomorrow for the series finale at 12 p.m. in Bobcat Field.
