Box Score
THIBODAUX - Clint Dempster limited Northwestern State to just four hits and three runs over 7.1 IP. However, it wasn't enough in a pitchers' duel with Northwestern State's Ryan Zimmerman on Sunday.
The Demons notched one each in the second and sixth and tacked on three more in the final two innings. Meanwhile, Zimmerman and preseason All-American closer Chad Sheppard combined to shut out the Nicholls State University baseball team (15-15, 6-8 Southland Conference) by a score of 5-0 to even the series between the two in-state rivals at one game each on Saturday.
The Colonels were led by Keith Kulbeth, who went 2-for-4 with a double. Adam Miley and Bear Comer each tallied a hit to extend their hitting streaks at nine and six games, respectively.
Dempster pitched well, stranding 10 base runners and limiting Northwestern State to a pair of sacrifice flies (one in the second and one in the sixth) through the first 7.0 IP. However, Nicholls was never able to break through against Zimmerman or Sheppard and the Demons added one more in the eighth and two more in the ninth for the 5-0 final.
The two teams will return to action on Sunday in the rubber match of the three game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field.
