Demons Rally Past Colonels

THIBODAUX - A two-run homer by Blake Bergeron staked the Colonels to an early lead, but the Demons rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth and tacked on eight in the final two innings to put the game out of reach as the Nicholls State University baseball team (15-16, 6-9 Southland Conference) dropped the rubber match of a three-game set with the Northwestern State Demons (21-10, 9-5 Southland) by a final of 12-3 on Sunday at Ray E. Didier Field.

Nicholls jumped out to an early lead as Blake Bergeron launched a two-run homer in the second. Bergeron's homer was proceeded by a Beau Faulk single. After a groundout, Cody Dufrene doubled down the left field line to chase Demon starter Trevor Geist from the game.

Staked to an early lead, Nicholls starter Tyler Minto pitched well early on. Minto allowed just two earned runs on eight hits over his 6.0 IP. However, after the Demons answered with an Eric DeBlanc solo homer in the third to cut the Colonel lead in half.

A pair of Colonel errors proved costly in the fourth as two unearned runs came across for the Demons. After Northwestern State claimed a 3-2 lead, the Colonels rallied to tie the game in their half of the fourth as Kasey Culverson drew a bases loaded walk to make it 3-3.

Unfortunately, the Demons took the lead for good in the fifth as Oscar Garcia doubled and scored on Jason Martinez's single, making it 4-3. The Colonels tried to rally, but Nicholls couldn't mount any offense against Mathias Simmons or Heth Hennigan. The Demon relievers allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out six Colonels over the final 5.2 innings.

Northwestern State put the game out of reach over the final two innings by scoring three runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth against four different Colonel relievers for the final 12-3 margin.
