THIBODAUX, La. -
The Nicholls State University softball team hung tough with No. 15 LSU, trailing 4-2 after three innings, but the Tigers pulled away with a 15-2 win on Wednesday night in front of a season's best 633 fans at the Colonel Softball Complex.
"We didn't play our best brand of softball tonight," said Head Coach Jenny Parsons. "The team knows that we have to put this behind us and get ready for a really good UTSA team this weekend."
The Colonels (20-12) left a total of eight runners on base in the defeat, including three in the bottom of the first. The Tigers (33-9) also benefited from five Nicholls errors in the game with three of those coming in the final frame that led to six LSU runs.
Nicholls got on the board in the first inning when senior Audrey Wood scored on a senior Natalie Travasos groundout to tie the score at one all. However, with only one out and runners on base, the Colonels came up empty after Wood crossed the plate.
LSU answered in the top of the second with a four-spot, while Nicholls would not score again until the bottom of the third on a RBI single by Travasos that plated scored Wood. Travasos finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Wood scored the Colonels only two runs.
The only other Colonels to record hits in the loss were sophomore Megan Gaspard and senior Lyndsay Mesh, each going 1-for-3.
Wood took the loss in the circle, falling to 5-3 on the season with the decision. The Lawton, Okla. native tossed a total of 1.1 innings, giving up five runs - all earned - on four hits.
Nicholls will host UTSA in a pivotal Southland Conference series this weekend in the Colonels Softball Complex. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
