THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team out-hit the UTSA Roadrunners in both contests, however hits did not translate into runs as the Colonels dropped a pair of 1-0 games on Saturday afternoon at the Colonel Softball Complex.

The Colonels (20-14, 12-8 Southland) and the Roadrunners (18-25, 12-11 Southland) slugged it out in the first behind two strong pitching performances that saw the game go a total of 10 innings. With the international tie breaker rule in effect at the start of the 10th inning, UTSA scored to take a 1-0 lead that proved to be enough to get the win.

In the bottom of the tenth, Nicholls advanced a runner to third with two outs, but senior Lyndsay Mesh lined out to the leftfielder to end the game. In the first game, Nicholls left a total of nine runners on base.

"We didn't hit to the best of our ability today, however I am really pleased with the way our pitching staff played," said Head Coach Jenny Parsons. "We just have to come back tomorrow and play with a higher level of intensity."

Senior Lacey Gros tossed all 10 innings for the Colonels, fanning a total of 12 and allowing only four hits. The lone run that crossed the plate was unearned. Getting the win for UTSA in the circle was Danye Holmes, giving up eight hits and retiring seven by way of strike out.

Sophomore Megan Gaspard led the charge for the Colonels offensively with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, while senior Natalie Travasos followed with a 2-for-4 showing.

In the second game, UTSA scored a run in the bottom of the third via a groundout by Rudi Cantu that plated Samantha Beeson. Beeson was pinch running for Emily Humpal who reached first to lead off the inning after an error in the outfield on a fly ball. Both Gaspard and freshman Ashton Bennett collided in the right center, and the ball was dropped.

Nicholls followed up the bottom of the third with a scoring opportunity as Travasos reached third with two outs, but was left stranded. That was as close as the Colonels would come to scoring for the remainder of the game.

Senior Audrey Wood suffered the loss in the circle for Nicholls, tossing the complete game and only giving up four hits. Like Gros, the run scored in the game was unearned.

Gaspard led the Colonels with a 2-for-3 showing, and was the only Colonel to record multiple hits in the loss.

Nicholls and UTSA will close out the series tomorrow in the Colonel Softball Complex. First pitch is set for Noon. Fans can follow the game live on the internet via www.thibodauxonline.com and can tune into GameTracker for live statistics at www.geauxcolonels.com.
