HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
The Nicholls State University softball team started its four-game road swing off right with a 9-6 victory over Southern Miss on Wednesday night at the USM Softball Complex.
The Colonels (22-14) struck first in the game, scoring two runs via two errors by the Golden Eagles (18-22). The first error brought in senior Lyndsay Mesh, and the second brought in Audrey Wood.
The score would remain 2-0 until the top of third when Nicholls went to work again, putting three more runs on the scoreboard to take a five run lead. The first run came via a freshman Ashton Bennett RBI single, and the other two came via a junior Tori Lay two RBI single down the leftfield line.
The Golden Eagles, who were hitless through got their first hit in the third inning, but left runners stranded to remain scoreless in the game.
Nicholls continued to add to its lead, increasing the tariff to 8-0 on a three RBI double to centerfield by freshman Jackie Burri. However in the bottom half, Southern Miss responded with six runs in the bottom half to make the midweek a contest a game, and come within striking distance, 8-6.
However, that is as close as Southern Miss would come as Nicholls held the club scoreless the rest of the way and got the victory. Getting the win in the circle for the Colonels was junior Carlee Winkelmann to improve to 6-3 on the season, while Bennett got the 3.1 innings save.
The Colonels had four players record multiple hits in the victory, while the Golden Eagles only had one player accomplish the feat.
Nicholls will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Northwestern State for a three-game series.
