NATCHITOCHES, La. -
The Nicholls State University softball team put together a three-run seventh inning, but came up short on Sunday in its 6-5 loss to Northwestern State on Sunday in the Lady Demon Diamond.
The Colonels (23-16, 14-10 Southland) struck first in the game, scoring in the top of the first via a homerun to centerfield by senior Audrey Wood to take the 1-0 lead. The Lady Demons (24-22, 10-14 Southland) responded in the bottom half with three of their own to take a 3-1 advantage.
Nicholls continued to be within striking distance courtesy of a sacrifice fly to leftfield by senior Lacey Gros that plated senior Natalie Travasos from third to make it a 3-2 game.
The score would remain that way until the bottom of the fifth when Northwestern State brought three home to extend its lead, 6-2. The three runs came off the bat of Tiffany Ward who hit a three-run homerun in the inning.
Nicholls would not get score again until the top of the seventh when Wood hit her second homerun of the game, a three-run shot over the centerfield fence to come within one, 6-5, with two outs.
However, sophomore Kayla Watterson popped out in the ensuing at bat, and the Colonels comeback bid came up short.
Leading the Colonels in the loss was Wood with a 3-for-4 performance that included four RBI, two runs scored and two homeruns.
Junior Carlee Winkelmann was charged with the loss, tossing 0.1 innings and giving up three runs on four hits. She was replaced in the bottom of the first inning, and Gros pitched the rest of the way. Winkelmann fell to 6-4 on the season with the loss.
